Better Together Book List

Reading is a vital component of character education and cannot be underestimated. Check out this book list with engaging stories about community and share the “5 Reasons Why Reading is Important to Kids” with parents.

These books support the Friendzy catchphrase “Better Together”. Each book explores relationships from a different lens; all of them point to the importance of friendship and community.

Reading for children cannot be underestimated. Reading for fun can benefit a child’s education, social and cognitive development, overall well-being, and mental health.

5 Reasons Why Reading Is Important for Kids

  1. Learn character education skills. Reading helps children gain a greater understanding of emotions, which can help them understand their own emotions and those of others. This helps dramatically with their development.

  2. Develop empathy. Reading a story creates space for kids to imagine themselves inside of the story. This allows young people to develop empathy as they experience the lives of other characters and can identify with how they are feeling. Children can then use this understanding to empathize with friends, family, and other people in real life.

  3. Practice perspective-taking. Reading allows children to learn about a wide array of people, places, and events that they may not otherwise experience. This gives children a deeper understanding of the world around them and cultures that are different from their own.

  4. Improve cognitive development. Reading provides children with a deeper understanding of the world and fill their brains with a wide range of knowledge. They then use this acquired knowledge to make sense of what they see, hear, and read, which aids their cognitive development.

  5. Builds relationships and connections. Reading brings a classroom of students together for a shared adventure. Reading also provides parents with an opportunity to dedicate time to their children. Reading together provides kids with feelings of connection and attention and is nourishing to the soul.
